Hyderabad, Nov 13: Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, president of the YSR Congress and Asaduddin Owaisi, supremo of the MIM appear to be setting their sights on the capturing the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
So far MIM and Congress have been sharing spoils in the corporation. The two have been taking the Mayoral post by turns. Now with the changed situation after MIM withdrew support to Congress both in the state and at the center, protesting against Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy’s attitude towards the Muslims, now there is every chance of the YSRCP and MIM joining hands in the GHMC.
It is learnt that YSRCP has already started poaching Congress corporators. Five corporators have already joined the YSRCP. Of these, while four were Congress men, one belonged to the TDP. It is learnt that 15 to 20 Congress corporators were in touch with the YSR Congress and might join the party any minute.
Several Congress corporators are dissatisfied with the way they were being ignored by the party MLAs and MPs when approached for developmental works in their areas. These corporators were reportedly planning to join the YSRCP, say sources. These corporators were stating that some MLAs, Ministers and MLCs had written complaints against them to the Chief Minister. The corporators were also angry with the Ministers, MLAs and MLCs as they were opposing allocation of Rs. 1 crore as development fund for their divisions. It is their complaint that the MLAs, Ministers and MLCs were opposing release of these funds as they did not want them gain influence in their division by implementing developmental works.
Congress won 55 of the 155 divisions. However after four corporators left the party, the strength came down to 51. Sitaphal Mandi corporator Vijaya Kumar who quit the Congress has become a prominent leader of the YSRCP. He was made Greater Hyderabad in charge. Later S Harsha Vardhan (Habsiguda). G Suryanarayana Reddy (Suraram Colony) and Singireddy Dhanapal Reddy (Cherlapalli) have also joined the YSRCP. TDP corporator D Surekha (R K Puram) has also joined the YSRCP along with her husband. They complain that MLAs do not want them to grow in stature, fearing that they would become a competition to them in getting party tickets during the assembly elections.
Greater Hyderabad Congress president and minister Danam Nagender has sensed the impending threat and started trouble shooting operations. He is likely to hold a meeting of the party corporators and try to contain further erosion of the party base in the city.
It is also learnt that three more MLAs were in touch with Jagan and they would join the YSRCP during Sharmila’s yatra.
